Wagon and barn
Friday afternoon we stopped by Eve's Garden Center near Millersville, PA. It was an interesting place and we took several photos to share this week. The gift shops would be appealing to the women folk with scented candles burning, music playing and a large assortment of home decor and gift items. This old wagon sits out in front of an old rustic barn.

"Discernment"

Message summary: Today we pray for each reader and also for ourselves, the messengers, that we will be wise biblically, full of discernment and understanding so that we will walk righteously in the ways of the Lord. Let's not just follow the crowd!

“Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong" (Exodus 23:2). "Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together" (Acts 19:32). "Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them; for the ways of the Lord are right, and the upright walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them" (Hosea 14:9).

Yesterday in our Adult Bible Fellowship class our lesson was on the background of Timothy. So we considered his ministry through the book of Acts beginning with the first mention of Timothy in Acts 16:1 when Timothy joined Paul and Silas on their second missionary tour.

As we proceeded we considered a text in Acts 19 that is quite appropriate to our own times. At any given time there are protests of some type, mostly in our cities and often connected with a college/university. Of course the now practically perpetual protests are pro-Hamas demonstrations which just simply boggles the imagination but is indicative of just how infiltrated our country has become and the utter gullibility and lack of discernment of so many.

The setting is in Ephesus and the entire context is Acts 19:21-41. They faced opposition to the delivering power of the Gospel message, in this case a silversmith named Demetrius who had gathered with other silversmiths to oppose Paul and his message. This was because they were feeling an economic impact due to loss of the idol-making business. "Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods".

It's true that people who turn to Christ will no longer be a driving force behind segments of the "economy" such as alcohol, illicit drug trade, tobacco, "adult" book store and the list gets longer.*

They arranged a protest which got ugly, "there arose no little disturbance" (v.23). To beef up their protest they also stirred the people up that the "great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship". Verse 29 states "So the city was filled with the confusion" which sounds like many modern protests that exist today.

But the main verse that caught my attention was this description, "Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together" (Acts 19:32).

Our teacher, Gordy, recalled a recent news story about a reporter who interviewed two college girls at one of the pro-Hamas protests and they really didn't know what it was all about nor do a lot of others who are there simply because of their friends. (I recall reading the same report.) They were essentially just following the crowd.

People can get stirred up so easily and so often are manipulated due to their lack of discernment or just following the crowd. Tony Perkins states, “There is no shortage of information today, but discernment based on knowledge is in dangerously short supply.”

We live during a time where information is abundant. We can get real time, up to the minute news from practically anywhere in the world. However any news source can have an agenda just like the agenda of the Silversmiths  who had lost business due to many converting to Christ.

Today let us consider the powerful last words of Hosea (written in the Biblical book bearing his name). This is an epilogue or conclusion to his book, extracting the general moral lesson which underlies it all. The tone and language of it reminds us of the Book of Proverbs.

"Whoever is wise, let him understand these things".
Bible teacher David Guzik writes, "The wise man will see the message throughout the Book of Hosea. He will understand that in His mercy, God offers a wonderful opportunity for repentance and restoration, and it is dangerous and foolish to neglect that invitation".

"Whoever is discerning, let him know them". Discernment is the ability to properly discriminate or make determinations. It is essentially wisdom being practiced. Being a discerning person is vitally important in light of all the deceptions we face in life, especially in the spiritual realm. Psalm 92:6 bluntly states, "Senseless people do not know, fools do not understand".

"For the ways of the Lord are right, and the upright walk in them". This is a timeless truth. Even in the midst of promised judgment, the wise and understanding man sees that the ways of the LORD are right, and every announcement of judgment is an invitation to repentance. It's still true today!

"But transgressors stumble in them." They did so during Hosea's time and still do today. The apostle Paul wrote, "But a natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned" (1 Corinthians 2:14).

Today we pray for each reader and also for ourselves, that we will be wise biblically, full of discernment and understanding so that we will walk righteously in the ways of the Lord. Let's not just follow the crowd!

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, we thank You for the gift of discernment, which is essentially applying wisdom that comes with spiritual insight, at times from learned experience, though sometimes developed poor choices we've made in the past but after choosing to walk in Your ways we've learned the biblical way. Discernment comes from Your Holy Spirit that enables us to determine the true assessment of a situation, person, or opportunity. By having a healthy and respectful fear of You, Father, we will be wise in our understanding for Your Word says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom". Amen.

* It's interesting to consider just how much of the economy is driven by consequences of disobedience to God.

Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources

"Blessed Assurance"  Watch on YouTube  The closing song from our service yesterday. Here's something you probably didn't know:

Fanny Crosby tombstone, Bridgeport, CT
We are standing behind the Fanny Crosby tombstone at Mountain Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport, CT. We were disappointed that her original tombstone was no longer present, just this one erected by friends in 1955. At her request the small original one read, "Aunt Fanny, 'She hath done what she could'" (from Mark 14:8). It's a remarkable blessing and protection from God that she lived to be just shy of 95 years, given that she was blind and often traveled unaccompanied by train across the country often to be a guest speaker  in many settings.  She is over 200 years old in heaven. I wonder if in heaven we'll celebrate our birthday every 100 years! (Brooksyne's note: The tall dark stranger in the photo is my husband, Stephen.)

Don and Carole Musser
Don and Carol Musser stopped by to visit us Friday afternoon. I met Don shortly after moving to this area in 200 serving as his chaplain when he worked at Engle Publishing. They now live in Colorado Springs but often make their way back to Mount Joy to visit family and friends.

Crossroads bike ride
Saturday morning we joined a group from our Crossroads ABF class for a bike ride up the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail from Columbia to Falmouth (about 28 miles round trip). This trail is only a few miles from our home but is really a premier trail with beautiful scenery along the Susquehanna River. We were especially pleased that Ester went with us and managed to ride 22 miles on her non-electric bike! Given her health history and more recent health struggles it was a tremendous accomplishment.

Ross and Nancy
After church service yesterday we stopped by to visit Ross and Nancy Weidman. Ross had a very serious stroke nearly two months ago and has really had some major overcoming in the hospital and rehab. He's headed home on Wednesday and will receive further care from home. He is one of our ABF teachers and sings in the choir.

Finally today:

Neighborhood ride
Last evening there was a large family gathering up the road from us and as we ate our dinner on our outside dining table we heard the pleasant sounds of joyful laughter as our neighbor Janae took her nieces and nephews for a ride in their golf cart.
